Racing Stories    ï»¿ï»¿Title. D

3/29/13:     2007 National Sr. Games.

One of his proudest accomplishments came during the 2007 National Senior Games held in Louisville, KY.  He had to qualify in order to participate and he decided to use the Missouri State Finals in Columbia as a springboard.  He won both the 5k and 10k and  was on his way to the Nationals.   June 30, 2007 he ran the 5k and was crowned  National Champion with a time of 25:12.  2 days later, he competed in the 10k.  It was very hot and humid and he was worried about the weather affecting his speed, particularly since the race was not being held early in the morning.  But he was able to overcome the heat and all other competitors is his age group, and won his 2nd National Championship.  His 10k time of 52:06  was not a PR, but was significant none the less,  since it was his 2nd race in 2 days!  He was 75.

3/14/13:     Kirksville, MO

Delbert always had an encouraging word for anyone exercising.  He enjoyed motivating and giving training tips to people he met "on the road."  Part of this was because of an experience he had during one of his first races.  He had signed up for a race in Kirksville, MO.  As the race unfolded and the miles began passing slowly by, he realized something.  He was the last runner in the race!  That did not make him very happy, but he was still determined to do his best, even if he DID come in dead last!  Pure  grit kept him going...and the fact that the beer truck was breathing down his neck!  Remembering this he would always laugh  and  wonder  if the driver was going to ask him "Hey, do you want a ride?"

2/15/13 :    ï»¿Hannibal Cannibal

Delbert's second race of his career was the brutal Hannibal Cannibal 10k.  It was his first attempt at a 10k and he finished in a respectable 1:05:21.  The very next year he ran it again, determined to beat last year's time.   At the age of 66 he smashed his course PR by 10 MINUTES!   55:26  was good enough to land him a first place medal in his age group.  2 years later he repeated that performance and took off another 3+minutes by finishing in 51:42.  He was a spry 68.  In 2008, he ran the 5k and won his age group in 26:37 ~ he was 76.

One of his favorite stories that he loved to tell was during the finish of HC, he was dueling  against one of his friends, Lois Hunsinger.  He was getting tired and was struggling to finish strong in the heat.  Lois' husband Kenny started  yelling "Come on Lois, you can beat Delbert!"  That was all the incentive he needed!  He dug down deep and decided he would beat Lois  ~ no matter what the cost!  It was a well run finish, but he got her right at the wire.  He thoroughly  enjoyed telling about their "duel in the sun".

"I thought the course description said "gently rolling"...

2/6/13 :  The Grim Reaper

Delbert ran this several times with family and members of the Pike County Road Runners Club.  He said anytime you had to run through a cemetery it was a great race motivator!  Running the 10k meant you ran through it TWICE!
